58-51 : Empire Stadium Ski Jump

Mark

This image shows the construction of a giant ski jump in Empire Stadium. In April of 1958, a 50m high ski jump was constructed for the 3-day long “Centennial Invitational Tournament.” It took the 25-man crew 13 days to set up the structure. Two machines capable of converting 300-pound blocks of ice into “snow” in eight seconds were brought in and blowers and hoses used to lay down a ribbon of white for the in-run and out-run, which extended the 110-yard length of the football field. The skiers would run into a pile of straw at the south end of the stadium.

For a quick moment, I saw the Beatles here back in Aug ’64. I was peeking thru the fence when a motorcycle escort and a limo with the four Beatles in it drove right past me on the other side of the fence. They made a right turn and went down a hill into the stadium so I’m guessing this happened at the top left corner where the pickup truck is parked. When the crowd started to push the fence down, my dad grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and dragged me out of there as he thought a riot was going to happen.
