62-10 : Kamloops Flats

Mark

This image was titled “Kamloops Flats Indian Reserve”. It was taken May 16, 1962. After doing a bit of research I’m having a hard time confirming if this really was an Indian Reserve. Any information would be appreciated.

Mission Flats. The Federal Government’s agricultural testing station was here if I am not mistaken, prior to moving out to the end of Ord Road.

The Indian reserve was at the other end of town. In your photo, it would be to the left of the most distant smokestack.

Yes it is Mission Flats – never heard it called Kamloops Flats, was rural, we rode horses down there as kids, the pulp mill really stunk things up when it came.

The flat area is known as Mission Flats. I’ve been in Kamloops for 33 years now and work at the pulp mill that is there now, built in 1964. There was also a sawmill on the flats near the island until 2008. This area used to the poor end of town. Contact the Kamloops museum for the reliable story on the flats. Never been a reserve as far as I know. Its north east of here, over the Red Bridge.

    Good luck.
