Does anyone know what the large 4 story building just to the left of the Bay St. Armoury is/was? The front of the property extends down to Douglas St. and it would seem it is where the Times Colonist Building is now.

It looks like it was a school maybe…

    • Patrick says:

That was North Ward School, a 14 room building erected in 1894. It was designed by C. J. Soule and built by Elford and Smith, contractors. Originally, the 3rd floor included an Assembly Hall that could hold over 600 people. The school was demolished in the mid 1960s.

      • Brian Townsend says:

My aunt went to North Ward School in the 1930′s. It was situated at the rear of the Times-Colonist building, and their playing field was at the front of the school off Douglas St. The building was demolished in 1968. In the area behind the school is where over a hundred house’s were demolished for the future Blanshard street extension. At the time it was very controversial.
