BO-51-238 : Brighouse Race Track

Mark

This is what was left of the Brighouse Race Track in Richmond from 1951. Brighouse was originally called Minoru Race Track when it first opened in 1909. It closed in 1914 when the first world war began and reopened in 1920 as Brighouse. It operated for 22 seasons until finally closing forever in 1942 when wartime gas rationing forced all racing to be transferred to Hastings Park. The track was covered in 1965 when Richmond Center began construction. I believe the intersection in the photo is No 3 Road and Cook Road, although it’s possible that it’s No 3 and Park Road.

These location comments already posted are correct. Further details are the left side of the image shows clearly the old municipal building, which was inline with Anderson Road and therefore one block north of that would be Park Road. It’s a great photo with wonderful detail.

#3 and park is the location. At the near end of the track is a Shed row of barns, and in front of them is a little house we called the polo house and that was my family home from the mid 40s to the fall of 1950.
There was a row of barns that ran from the front of the house on the edge of no. 3 north to cook st.
My father was allowed to demolish these barns and salvage as much of the lumber he could. The lumber was used to build a house on garrison rd. which is visible above the track

Your second thought is correct. The long building to the right of the road is the old quonset hut that was the bowling alley. Time square went in to the right of that and I would get off the bus across from time square and walk on the track over to Foster Road to attend Richmond High
