1-70 : Burnside Victoria Mill
This is another view of the Burnside area of Victoria from 1951, this time looking East. Although many of these photos are centered on the mill, you get a great view of Victoria in the background. For reference, the intersection just to the right of the center of the frame would be the corner of Hillside Ave. and Turner St.
You can see a portion of the Canadian National railway yard at bottom, including a steam engine by the engine house and some of the yard structures.
Great to see you back!
Hi there – Herald and Store are not in this photo as stated in the caption. We’re looking east along Hillside Ave just right or centre, toward the dreaded roundabout at Douglas/Government/Gorge & Hillside. The street to the left of centre is David. Point Ellice House is in the clump of trees at the waterline and that’s the Moore-Whittington Mill framed by log booms in the left foreground. On the far right, Bay St curves toward Government.
Jennifer Barr and I are very glad you’re back in business, as these photos as so incredibly helpful as we compile This Old House for the Victoria Heritage Foundation.
One strange thing is that as I type, the photo zooms in to maximum magnification. Not bad, just weird.
