BO-48-2862 : Brownsville, Surrey
This is the Timberland Lumber Company Sawmill, located in the Brownsville area of Surrey, from 1948. The dock that you see near the sawmill, might very well be the remains of Surrey’s only ferry terminal. It operated between Surrey and New Westminster up until the late 1800’s. In the background, of course, is New Westminster.
The farm in the picture (west side) was owned by Ostrom and the house to the right was owned by Olson. The road leading to the Ostrom farm was called Olson Road.
The mill in this photo is the Brownsville Sawmill. It was a cedar sawmill. The Timberland Sawmill was about 1.5 to 2.0 miles west of this sawmill on the river. Timberland was a softwood mill processing spruce, hemlock, pine timber. The Timberland Sawmill was purchased by Canadian Colliers Ltd in the late 1950’s early 1960’s. The mill was again sold to Champion Forest Products headquartered in New York and that company was purchased by Weldwood of Canada.
